  • Henry says Pep Guardiola “changed the game” & describes him as “a freak” in how he sees football
  • Arsenal legend credits Guardiola with shaping the way he understands and analyses the game
  • Henry predicted Guardiola would “dominate English football” when he arrived at Man City in 2016

Thierry Henry has paid a glowing tribute to Pep Guardiola following the Catalan’s departure from Manchester City, saying the outgoing manager changed the game and that his own understanding of football was shaped by working under him.

The Arsenal legend, who was coached by Guardiola at Barcelona from 2007-10, spoke to Betway about the loss the Premier League has suffered following Guardiola’s emotional farewell last month after 10 years at the Etihad Stadium.

Henry had named Nico O’Reilly as “a dream come true” for Guardiola earlier this season and his latest comments go considerably further – placing the outgoing manager’s contribution to the game in a broader, more personal context.

Henry: Pep’s a freak – he’s not normal in terms of how he sees the game

In a heartfelt tribute to a manager who has left a permanent mark on every player coached by him, Henry touched on both the tactical and personal legacy Guardiola leaves behind in English football.

“All I can say is that Pep is a special guy,” the World Cup winner said. “He changed the game. I remember being on Sky when he first came to Man City and I said to everybody, ‘Be careful, he’s going to dominate English football’.

“It was easy for me to see because I had him as a coach. You have the full-back going inside now – that’s Pep Guardiola. He brought back the false nine. How many Man City fans became Man City fans because of him?

“Not because they were winning, but because of how they played. Winning four in a row in the Premier League, 100 points, winning the treble, how he goes about things, how passionate he is.

“He’s a freak. He’s not normal in terms of how he sees the game. I always have a lot of love for him because the way I see the game now is thanks to Pep Guardiola.”

Henry’s prediction from 2016 proved accurate in every sense. Guardiola won six Premier League titles at the Etihad Stadium, including a historic run of four consecutive league titles between 2021-24, while also claiming the UEFA Champions League, multiple FA Cups and Carabao Cups in one of the most dominant managerial tenure in English football history.

What is the wider context for Guardiola’s legacy?

Henry’s point about fans being drawn to City through the style of play rather than simply the winning is one that has been made repeatedly since Guardiola’s departure, with former players and pundits alike reflecting on what made the era special beyond the trophy count.

Ilkay Gundogan wrote in his farewell tribute that Guardiola “challenged me to see football differently” from the first day they worked together, while Bernardo Silva described him as “my father of football” on the final day of the recent season.

For Henry, the gratitude is similarly personal – a manager who did not just win trophies but fundamentally altered the way those closest to him understand the game.
