‘ He could open a can of soup’: Dalglish hails Florian Wirtz as he shares advice for Liverpool star

Midfielder Florian Wirtz has not had a blistering start to life at Liverpool, failing to register any goal involvement in eight appearances. As a result, Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher has urged manager Arne Slot to drop him from the starting XI.However, Sir Kenny Dalglish has been impressed with the German midfielder and has offered him advice on how to improve. He told Stick to Football Podcast: “The first thing he needs to do is what he’s doing at the moment. He’s great at taking the ball into the feet, he’ll open himself up, and the pass has beat you, but he’s still got control of it.“Or he’ll take it the other way back past you to go that way, and you’re going this way. He can see what’s in front of him, and once he gets it…I saw Isak the other day, the second half when he came on, I think, and he’s talking to one of the boys about his movement, what he would do.“And the boy is sitting and listening to him, and once they get on the same wavelength…by the way, that wee fella, he could open a can of soup.”

Wirtz’s slow start at Liverpool has been exaggerated

Wirtz has already shown glimpses of what he can offer Liverpool, and that has gone under the radar. According to OptaJoe, he has created 21 chances across all competitions – the most of any Premier League player.Among his Liverpool team-mates, Wirtz ranks joint-first for big chances created, first for key passes and third for successful dribbles per game in the league. However, no Liverpool player has lost more possession than him, suggesting that he needs to be stronger on the ball.Slot also needs to get him in more advanced positions, rather than asking him to drop deep often, which he is not used to. Patience is required for the Germany international to reach the heights he showed at Bayer Leverkusen, but suggestions that he has been poor for Liverpool have been exaggerated.
