Sheyi Ojo never lived up to the lofty expectations placed on him back during his teenage years

Now more than ever, we're seeing teenage prospects bought for decent seven-figure fees, but while it's become more prevalent recently, it's nothing new in football.

Indeed, the likes of Rio Ngumoha moving from Chelsea to Liverpool as a 16-year-old back in 2024 for £2.8 million, or the fact that Manchester City may be made to pay £1 million for a 14-year-old out of Southampton's academy, may be gaining traction now.

But back in 2011, Liverpool spent £2 million on then-14-year-old Sheyi Ojo from MK Dons, who was highly regarded as one of the brightest young English talents at the time.

Then-MK boss Karl Robinson admitted Ojo was "as good as I've seen at that age." Unfortunately, the teenage prospect never hit the highs his youth career promised he could.

Ojo's move to Liverpool saw him develop in the Reds' academy until he was old enough to be loaned out to another senior side.

Aged 17, before he'd made his senior bow for Liverpool, the winger was loaned out to Wigan Athletic, who were struggling at the foot of the Championship during the 2014/15 campaign.

Arguably, there could have been a better scenario for a first loan, as the hype surrounding him mixed with the need for him to come and help save the Tics from relegation ultimately culminated in a rather uneventful spell, registering no goal contributions in 11 games and picking up a relegation to League One on his CV.

That being said, there was still plenty of expectation surrounding Ojo, and he was sent to Wolves the following summer. The Old Gold had finished just outside the play-offs in the 2014/15 term, so a chance to play for a better team, in theory, could have helped him grow.

Three goals and three assists in 19 games in all competitions, for an 18-year-old, was promising, especially given he only started five times in league action. A mixture of a lack of starts and an injury crisis, though, saw Jürgen Klopp recall Ojo that January.

Whether it was planned or not, 18-year-old Ojo was allowed to stake his claim as a key player for Liverpool in the early stages of the rebuild under Klopp back in 2016.

Despite picking up three assists in just five Premier League starts, though, the teenager wasn't able to remain an important player heading into the following campaign. Liverpool bolstered their wide options with Sadio Mané that summer.

Understandably, Ojo couldn't make his way into the side ahead of the likes of him and Philippe Coutinho out wide, especially after he was sidelined for the opening stages of that season with a back injury.

What was arguably more damaging, though, was that when he returned, he didn't get sent back out on loan, instead featuring in FA Cup games and the odd under-21s matchup throughout the 2016/17 term.

From that point on, Ojo remained under contract at Liverpool for five more years without making a first-team appearance.

He'd spend his early 20s being sent out on various loan spells across the country, ranging from stints in Ligue 1 with Stade Reims to Scotland for Rangers. None of them, including even one at promotion-chasing Fulham in 2017/18, proved fruitful for the wideman.

However, he was given somewhat of a lifeline in the summer of 2020, being sent out on loan once again to the Championship, this time with Cardiff City. The Bluebirds had just come off the back of a play-off campaign, so, again, this was a good opportunity for Ojo to prove himself at the top end of the second tier.

Things seemed to finally click for him in the Welsh capital. Cardiff finished just outside the top six, but Ojo contributed with 12 goal contributions in 41 appearances. Crucially, he was given consistent game time, and it proved successful.

Unfortunately, he couldn't maintain that performance level at Millwall the next year, being sidelined for the majority of his time at the Den, and that proved to be the final loan spell of his Liverpool career. The then-25-year-old left in the summer of 2022 and moved back to Cardiff.

This wasn't a Cardiff side challenging for promotion anymore, though, and Ojo didn't have nearly the impact he had on the Bluebirds side two years earlier. He lasted just one year back there before being loaned out to Belgian side KV Kortrijk and subsequently being released.

After leaving Cardiff following his spell in Belgium, Ojo made the move to Slovenian powerhouse Maribor in a career switch not many were expecting.

He spent two seasons there, scoring four and assisting seven across both years in the top-flight before making the switch to the Kazakhstan Premier League to play for Aktobe this summer.

Ojo only turned 29 back in June, so to spend his traditional 'prime' years in the Kazakhstan league is definitely not something many would have predicted back in 2011, when he was brought to Liverpool for £2 million as a 14-year-old.

There's always a risk to be taken when investing in someone years away from being able to contribute to a first-team's success. Ojo's career trajectory post-Liverpool is an example of that risk not paying off.
