Scotland boss Steve Clarke feels that West Ham star Andy Irving has surprised people with his career path and admitted that he is looking forward to working with the Irons man.

The Scottish midfielder started his career with Hearts before he made some unusual choices in his professional career.

He left Hearts in 2021 for German club Turkgucu Munchen and the following year he moved to Austrian outfit Austria Klagenfurt.

West Ham signed him last year and immediately sent him back on loan to the Austrian outfit where he made 15-goal contributions in 30 appearances.

Irving has received his first-ever senior Scotland call-up and Clarke insists that he is looking forward to meeting the Irons midfielder up close and personal in the upcoming international break.

“The first time I came across Andy when I was managing Kilmarnock”, Clarke told a press conference about the West Ham man.

“He was put in the Hearts team as a very young man, still growing in his frame a little bit.

“I think he surprised everybody, the choices that he made to move abroad and roundabout ways ended up in the English Premier League.

“It will be nice to see him again, up-close and personal.”

Irving has made three substitute appearances under Julen Lopetegui this season so far and he will be looking to impress the Irons boss with performances in Scotland colours.
