Manager Eddie Howe praised striker Nick Woltemade for his performance in Newcastle United’s 2-1 Premier League win over Manchester City , at St.James’ Park on Saturday evening.
Woltemade headed into the fixture on the back of an impressive outing with Germany, but was poor against City, missing gilt-edged chances.
The 23-year-old missed two big chances to give Newcastle the lead in the fixture, although he forced goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma to make two saves.
His misses could have proved costly if not for the brilliance of Harvey Barnes, who scored twice, helping Newcastle secure a third consecutive home league victory.
However, Howe was delighted with the performance of the former VfB Stuttgart striker.
He told The BBC: Nick played his part today. I was really pleased he was getting the chance today. He has done really well to score with the chances he has had with us, but we need to create more for him and he needs to do better in some situations.
“They were there for him today and the goalkeeper has made a couple of saves to deny him, but it was very evident that he was a threat in the game.”
Howe has now recorded his first-ever league win against Man City and will be hoping his side can build on this momentum.
Newcastle have won just four games out of their opening 12 matches and will need consistency to qualify for the UEFA Champions League for the second consecutive season.
The Magpies are in action in Europe’s elite club competition on Tuesday, facing Marseille at Stade Velodrome.
