FLW's Sunderland fan pundit has identified which former player he'd love to bring back to the club

Sunderland’s summer transfer window is now over and the current squad is set until at least January.

Régis le Bris will have to work with what he has for the next few months barring any potential free agent additions.

The Black Cats have come into the September international break sitting top of the table, but the club will still be wondering what further additions they could’ve made to possibly strengthen the team further.

Supporters will also be thinking about former players that have left that could be valuable members of the current squad had they not departed, with Jack Clarke being this summer’s major exit.

The winger was sold to Ipswich Town in a deal worth £15 million, according to the BBC.

When asked which former player he’d bring back to the club right now, FLW’s Sunderland fan pundit Eddy Bamber answered Amad Diallo.

He believes that the winger would bring a strong attacking threat from out wide or through the middle, highlighting key attributes that he feels the current team lacks at the moment.

“The former Sunderland player who I think would fit into the current starting XI perfectly is Amad Diallo, who we had on loan from Manchester United two seasons ago,” Bamber told Football League World.

“He would be really effective, he could play on the wing, he could be interchangeable with [Romanine] Mundle or Patrick Roberts, and he would be more than capable of carrying out the duties Régis le Bris would ask of him, taking advantage of those wide overloads.

“But he could also be played in the middle, and I think he would add an extra dimension there.

“Because, although moving it down the wings is seemingly the way that we’re playing a the moment, Amad Diallo could pick out a 20 or 30 yard screamer out of nothing from the middle.

“I don’t think we have that at the moment, and then there’s also his set pieces, where he was absolutely fantastic with free kicks.

“So he would be brilliant.

“It will never happen though, unless we’re really lucky and got him on loan, but I don’t think Man United are going to sell him, unfortunately, certainly not to a Championship team.”

Amad signed for Sunderland in the summer of 2022, and thrived under Tony Mowbray during his one year at the Stadium of Light.

The Ivorian was crucial to the team earning a top six finish in their first year back in the Championship, missing out on promotion with a play-off semi-final defeat to Luton Town.

The now 22-year-old contributed 13 goals and three assists from 37 regular league appearances, and stood out as a top talent in the Championship that year (all stats from Fbref).

However, he has since gone on to stake a claim as a regular presence in Erik ten Hag’s side at Old Trafford in recent months, meaning it’s unlikely he will return to Sunderland anytime soon.

Amad Diallo was electric for Sunderland

Amad was a very exciting player to watch during his time at Sunderland, and was a part of an electric attack alongside Clarke on the opposite side.

While he struggled for game time when he initially went back to Man United, potentially opening the door to another loan, he has since grown into a regular fixture of the team.

This will come as no surprise to Sunderland supporters, with the forward quickly becoming a fan favourite during his time with the Wearside outfit.

The Black Cats will surely have to gain promotion back to the Premier League in order to ever have a chance of bringing him into the team again at some point in the future.
