Lampard is a legend at Chelsea, and is the clubs highest goalscorer, whilst he’s had two separate spells in the dugout.

His most recent spell was on an interim basis at the end of the 2022/2023 season after Graham Potter was sacked with ten games remaining.

Nicky Butt backs Frank Lampard for third Chelsea spell

Lampard was seen in the stands watching Chelsea’s 3-0 defeat to Manchester City last weekend, and is on the brink on guiding Coventry City to promotion to the Premier League.

Liam Rosenior has come under intense pressure in recent weeks, with Chelsea on a poor run of form and in danger of missing out on Champions League football.

Behdad Eghbali has come out and defended Rosenior, but football is a results based business, and Chelsea are currently sixth, four points behind Liverpool in the final Champions League position.

Felipe Luis and Cesc Fabregas have been touted as possible replacements, and now Butt has backed Lampard for another spell in charge.

“Do you think if Frank Lampard gets promotion with Coventry they could go back in for Frank?, he told The Good, The Bad and The Football Podcast.

“He got the job too early the first time I think and he had the transfer embargo so he had to use a lot of young players.

“It wouldn’t be a stupid thing to go and get Frank Lampard back in charge of Chelsea for me. He’s done a great job at Coventry.

“He’s got a bit more experience now and he probably made a few mistakes the first time around. People need to understand that transfer embargo means you have to rely on loads of young players, that must have been difficult for him.

A better manager this time around?

Butt feels Lampard would be a different manager, and thinks he’d do an amazing job if given the opportunity again.

“He would be a totally different manager now,” he added.

“I think Lampard would find it easier working with better players, it would be easier for him to get his messages across to more technical players.

“If Frank went back into Chelsea, with all the experience he’s got now, I think he would do an amazing job, I really do.”
