Tottenham Hotspur star Xavi Simons has been ruled out for the rest of the season after rupturing his anterior cruciate ligament.

The 23-year-old picked up the injury during Spurs’ 1-0 win at Wolverhampton Wanderers on Saturday.

Simons twisted his knee while chasing a ball towards the byline in the second half at Molineux, and was stretchered off the field.

The Guardian report the attacking midfielder will now be out for around eight months.

This means he will not be part of Ronald Koeman’s Netherlands squad for the World Cup finals this summer.

A ‘heartbroken’ Simons posted an emotional message on his social media account, saying: “They say life can be cruel and today it feels that way.

“My season has come to an abrupt end and I’m just trying to process it. Honestly, I’m heartbroken. None of it makes sense. All I’ve wanted to do is fight for my team and now the ability to do that has been snatched away from me, along with the World Cup.”

Simons has been a key player for Tottenham this season, featuring in 28 Premier League matches and making seven direct goal contributions.

The Lilywhites will miss the Dutchman’s creativity in attack, as they look to avoid relegation to the Championship.

Tottenham claimed a much-needed victory at Wolves on Saturday following an 82nd-minute goal from Joao Palhinha.

But they failed to climb out of the relegation zone, with West Ham United also winning their game against Everton.

Roberto De Zerbi’s team now face a tricky away fixture at Aston Villa, who are competing for a Champions League finish.

Villa were unbeaten in three league matches before their shocking 1-0 loss at Fulham last weekend.
