Former Sunderland academy striker Jake Waters is on trial with National League North newcomers Hebburn Town, but manager Daniel Moore says the club cannot wait long for his decision as he targets full-time football.

Moore said: “We have just been helping Jake out - but he wants to stay in full-time football and whether that works out for him, we will wait and see. I’ve told him that we can’t wait because we still have work to do ourselves - but I understand where he is at in his career.” Speaking to Sunderland Echo.

Waters joined Hebburn midway through last season as they chased the Northern Premier League Premier Division title, having battled two ACL injuries at the Academy of Light.

He marked his debut by coming off the bench to score twice in a 3-0 home win over Stocksbridge Park Steels, then helped deliver a historic promotion by seeing off FC United of Manchester and Hednesford Town in a three-horse title race.

Waters returned to Sunderland after the campaign and was among several youngsters released last month. The 20-year-old is still seeking a club and featured for Hebburn in Tuesday night’s pre-season friendly against Lee Cattermole’s Gateshead. He could get another chance when Hebburn visit Morpeth Town on Saturday, 2pm kick-off.
