Héctor Cúper has returned to club management at 70, taking charge of Universitario de Deportes, Peru’s most decorated side and the reigning Liga 1 champions. According to Superdeporte, the Argentine has been announced as the club’s new head coach.

The move comes more than a decade after he chose to focus on international football, overseeing Egypt, Uzbekistan, Congo and Syria, having earlier coached Georgia. He now returns to Latin America, arriving in Lima to work day to day again.

Universitario are pursuing a historic fourth successive league crown and want to correct a stuttering run in the domestic competition and the Copa Libertadores. Sporting manager Antonio García Pye said the appointment represents a significant step up in quality.

Between 1999 and 2001 at Valencia, after success with Mallorca, Cúper won the 1999 Spanish Super Cup and guided the team to consecutive Champions League finals. Valencia lost to Real Madrid in Paris, then to Bayern Munich on penalties in Milan.

He lands in Peru with a reputation for order, discipline and tactical conviction that long endeared him to Mestalla. The respect for his body of work remains undimmed, and Universitario will aim to tap into that experience.
