Mathys Tel may already be left questioning his move to the English capital after playing a small part in Tottenham’s near-spineless display in the Carabao Cup semi-final second leg.
Ange Postecoglou’s men went out of the competition with barely a whimper at Anfield after succumbing to a four-goal defeat (4-1 on aggregate) against a rampant Liverpool side.
‘Way too good for us tonight’ was the Australian coach’s verdict, and you’d be hard-pressed to find even the most forgiving Spurs supporter willing to defend that display.
Now on the cards for the Merseysiders: An opportunity for silverware to truly kick off the Arne Slot regime. They’ll have to get past Eddie Howe’s silverware-starved Newcastle United outfit first, of course!
And for Tottenham and January loan addition Tel? An FA Cup fourth round trip to Villa Park.
There were sparks of intelligent play from the Bayern Munich loanee during Tottenham’s Anfield collapse.
The 19-year-old Frenchman provided a key pass amongst 18 touches of the ball, though failed to do much else of note beyond firing into the side netting in the second half.
Nonetheless, there’ll be plenty of time for Tel to showcase just what he’s about ahead of potentially putting himself in the shop window once again at the end of the season.
Succeed in that task ahead of the summer and the teenager may find another Premier League club in Manchester United knocking on Max Eberl and Bayern’s door.
“There were also talks with Manchester United who were interested in Mathys Tel’s signature. Tel was certainly open to the move, but United weren’t prepared to pay the loan fee Bayern Munich were demanding at the time (€5m),” Christian Falk told CaughtOffside in his latest exclusive Fact Files column.
“So, you see, there was a huge difference to the offer Tottenham came to the table with.
“Whether Tel stays with Bayern beyond the summer or moves on, it’s entirely up to him. If he can make the step to United, he would like to do it. If he sees a chance at Bayern Munich, perhaps he would also stay, but I think it’s hard for him, as he didn’t make it under Vincent Kompany.
“So, I think if he is performing very well, he will stay in the Premier League. If he doesn’t, he has to go back to Bayern and start again.”
The BILD reporter confirmed Tottenham had secured a €60m release clause in the loan deal taking Mathys Tel to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
Even should the London-based outfit opt not to make the move permanent in the summer window, there’s a reasonably good chance one can expect this figure to be quoted to other interested parties.
Whether United would feel inclined to pull the trigger, of course, will depend in no small part on how successful his loan in England turns out to be.
