The Portuguese Football Federation’s refereeing council announced the appointments for the fourth round of Liga Betclic, with Hélder Carvalho assigned to Benfica v Estoril on Monday at 20:15 at Estádio da Luz. The fixture closes the round and could mark João Palhinha’s Benfica debut.
Carvalho last took charge of Benfica in the 1-1 draw with Casa Pia in Rio Maior, a contest marked by a flashpoint near the dugouts involving members of both coaching staffs.
The confrontation, which the disciplinary report recorded as a heated exchange, involved Marco Aurélio Santos, Casa Pia’s director of football, and Pedro Machado, then José Mourinho’s assistant at Benfica.
It began when one staff member left his technical area, and Machado attempted to take the ball from the Casa Pia official. Strong language followed, including an expletive-laden demand for the ball.
On the pitch, Benfica went ahead on 68 minutes when Andreas Schjelderup picked out Richard Ríos, the Colombia international finishing to open the scoring.
The lead lasted 11 minutes. At 79, a poor decision by António Silva allowed Casa Pia to level, and despite late pressure Benfica could not find a winner.
