Sky Sports pundit Paul Merson has urged Arsenal to go after Bayern Munich striker Harry Kane if he becomes available for £54 million in January 2026.
The former Tottenham Hotspur star has a release clause in his contract at the Bundesliga club which could see him leave for £54m next year, and Merson thinks the Gunners should be considering making a move for him if their struggles to win the Premier League title continues.
“Oh, he will be going to Arsenal then; Arsenal will buy him,” the former Gunners forward said when told about the buyout clause in the contract of Kane.
“£54 million, why not? Sol Campbell did. If he is available, Arsenal need now… If Arsenal have not won the league, you have got to take a chance, buy someone who is proven. I would not be surprised.”
Kane notched 213 Premier League goals while with Spurs, and a return to England could appeal to him as he is only 47 goals behind Alan Shearer’s all-time top-flight goal record.
However, joining Arsenal may not excite him given his Tottenham history, and the Gunners are unlikely to go after him despite their dire need for a striker.
Besides, Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy negotiated first refusal as part of the agreement which saw the 31-year-old join Bayern in 2023.
However, the clause can only be activated in the event of Bayern agreeing to sell Kane and the striker giving the green light to return to Spurs, but there is no fixed fee in Tottenham’s first-option stipulation, and they would still have to negotiate a price with Bayern before exercising the option.
Should another club ever activate his release clause, Spurs would have the possibility of matching the offer and will likely not hesitate to do so should Arsenal make such an attempt.
Kane has continued his impressive run in the final third since moving to the German top-flight, with 55 goals and 16 assists to his name in 50 appearances, and the Gunners could do with such a forward within their ranks, especially if he becomes available for £54m.
However, Arsenal will have to look elsewhere for the number 9 manager Mikel Arteta craves, with RB Leipzig star Benjamin Sesko and Newcastle United hitman Alexander Isak on their radar ahead of the next summer transfer window.
