Henry Martin hoping to keep proving himself to make Mexico's World Cup roster

The battle to make Mexico's 26-player roster as a striker is tight. With just two months until the World Cup,  Raul Jimenez, Rogelio Funes Mori, Henry Martin and Santiago Gimenez continue to compete for just three slots under head coach Gerardo Martino.

“I feel satisfied because we do not have lack of forwards to choose from. In this case, I prefer the problem of having abundance rather than lack of options,” said coach Martino before confirming he would only select three strikers.

The four players were called up to El Tri’s final international window to face Peru and Colombia, as Martino looks to finalize the team. But Jimenez and Funes Mori will not make an appearance at either match due to injury, with the Wolves figure under watch after picking up a groin/adductor issue early in the Premier League season, and Funes Mori in recovery from a summer knock.

Club America’s forward Henry Martin will now have the opportunity to prove himself once again in an international level. He’s coming in as one of Liga MX’s leading goalscorers with 10 tallies so far this season to inspire the Eagles to the top of the league. But even after going unbeaten in his last 11 matches, the pressure will be on.

“It would be a huge opportunity to keep proving to myself that I am able, and a result of what I have accomplished these past couple of months,” Martin said to 90min of playing in the national team and making the World Cup. “But for now, I will continue to be focused on myself, what I can do, and keep working for the team.”

The America player is no stranger to the international stage, racking up six goals in 23 appearances for El Tri since debuting in 2015. He also formed part of the Mexican side that earned a bronze medal at the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo.

But Qatar would be his first World Cup experience. And Mexico must get to the international tournament in full force to make it out of the group stage, after drawing Argentina, Saudi Arabia and Poland.
