Club América captain Henry Martín admitted the 1-0 Clásico Nacional defeat to Chivas stung the squad, calling it a wake-up call and accepting they fell short when it mattered. According to Goal.com, he urged a collective response across the remainder of the Clausura 2026 campaign.
He fronted up to frustration in the dressing room, stressing accountability must start with each player. “We spoke openly because these situations can’t happen again,” he said. “It hurts, of course it does, but we have to move forward. There’s still a lot left to play for, but first we have to look at ourselves.”
América’s attacking problems are clear, with only three goals so far in the tournament and a lack of sharpness in front of goal. “We’re following the plan and the system, but it’s clear we’re not being decisive enough,” he explained. “We’re not creating or finishing the way this club demands. We simply have to give more.”
The defeat extends a worrying dip for a team that only recently celebrated a historic tricampeonato and is now searching for its identity. “When América takes this kind of hit, that’s often when we respond best,” Martín said, adding that such setbacks can force a reaction.
América visit Puebla at the Estadio Cuauhtémoc on Friday, an immediate chance to steady their season. Puebla are 13th with five points after recent tournaments spent near the bottom, making this a crucial opportunity to respond.
