Following Canada’s troublesome 4-1 defeat to Croatia in match-week 2 of the 2022 World Cup, Canada boss John Herdman expressed an immense amount of pride for his squad despite the unwanted result.

The Canadian maple leaves entered the pitch ruthless, stunning Dalic’s side with an early goal under the two minute mark as Alphonso Davies headed home a brilliant cross from Brugge winger Tajon Buchanan, obtaining the lead and as well as their first ever goal within the World Cup.

Although the Bayern Munich full-back provided his nation with a glimpse of hope in obtaining a spot within the knock-out stages, the moment filled with euphoria was short-lived as Herdman’s squad was incapable of managing the overwhelming three-in-the midifeld of Croatia, as well as their fluid transition when in-possession.

Consequently, Canada were dismantled as marksman Andrej Kramaric notched a brace in a 4-1 victory over the red and white of Concacaf, forcing them to bid their farewells after only two fixtures under the lights of Doha.

While speaking in a post-match interview, as relayed by TSN, Herdman expressed how proud of his 26-man roster albeit their failure to make it out of the group stage:

“I feel a lot of pride, I thought you know in moments they sure could compete on the world stage and knowing that people back home in the East and the West we’re celebrating our first ever goal somewhere was a great moment. When Croatia scored that second goal, I thought that was it was a turning point because we had to come out after the game and when you give them that little inch they’ll take a yard as they are killers in transition, but you know we fought and in the end I thought we had good chances and thought we could have had another goal.”
