As reported earlier today, Real Madrid defender Fran Garcia is all set to complete a transfer to La Liga club Real Betis.

The operation is now as good as complete, with transfer expert Fabrizio Romano giving the deal his trademark ‘Here we go’ seal of approval.

€4 million for 50% of player’s rights

Once again, Real Madrid have made sure to retain some degree of control over a departing player’s future.

As confirmed, the agreement between Los Blancos and Real Betis for Fran Garcia is worth €4 million for only 50% of the player’s economic rights.

It means that if the Verdiblancos decide to sell the 26-year-old left-back in the future, Real Madrid would stand to pocket half of any transfer fee received.

The Spaniard is expected to sign a four-year contract with Manuel Pellegrini’s side, keeping him at Betis until 2030.

Good deal for all parties involved

Garcia came through the ranks at Real Madrid, having joined the academy back in 2013. After seven years at the club, he left for Rayo Vallecano in 2020, initially on loan, before the transfer was made permanent a year later.

The left-back flourished at the Spanish club, prompting Real Madrid to re-sign him in 2023 for a nominal fee, thanks to a buyback clause in the deal.

However, upon returning, Garcia found it hard to displace Ferland Mendy as the starting left-back in his first couple of seasons despite the Frenchman’s injury woes.

The signing of Alvaro Carreras last year made it even more challenging for the Spaniard, while Real Madrid opted to rope in Marc Cucurella this summer, pushing their academy product further down the pecking order.

Therefore, a parting of ways makes sense for both the club and the player. Garcia will continue playing in Spain for a club competing in Europe, where he will have a genuine chance of establishing himself as a regular.

Meanwhile, Real Madrid pocket a fee of €4 million for a player who was not in the team’s plans and was in the final year of his contract. Moreover, there is scope for future earnings thanks to the club retaining 50% of his rights.
