Michael Owen has claimed that Benjamin Sesko is nothing more than a ‘squad player’ at Manchester United.

Indeed, the former frontman has issued a dubious verdict over United’s No.30 as he approaches the end of his maiden season in Red.

How Benjamin Sesko is faring this campaign

While Sesko endured a slow start, as most young players do when transitioning from a league like the Bundesliga over to the English top flight, he has enjoyed a prolific run of form as of late.

Heading into the international break, the Slovenian had established a hugely impressive record of seven goals in his last 10 Premier League appearances – four of which had come as a substitute.

Showing that he’s able to make an impact in such short cameos has come as a major positive for United, who’ve been crying out for a really clinical centre-forward in recent years.

It goes without saying that there’s still plenty of development necessary for the 22-year-old, but he’s certainly on the right path, and when all is said and done in May, he can be pretty satisfied with his first year in England.

What Owen had to say about Sesko

Owen, however, is of a different viewpoint.

He reckons that Sesko has not resolved the Red Devils’ goalscoring woes upfront, and he is instead just a temporary fix until the real deal is brought in.

United agreed a deal worth £73 million to bring the youngster in from RB Leipzig last summer, proving they were confident that he could be the one to lead their line for the coming seasons.

“To me, he’s not the answer long-term. If Man Utd are playing in their biggest game of the season tomorrow, I don’t think he starts,” said Owen, as relayed by MailSport journalist Chris Wheeler yesterday.
