During the week, there were rumours that due to the current financial issues at Oostende, their Challenger Pro League game against promotion chasing Zulte Waregem would not go ahead. In the end, the side at the bottom of the table were able to look to try and claw back some points that had been lost due to points deductions.
Despite the odds being stacked against them, the team from the coast gave their fans a rare piece of joy in what has been a miserable season so far. On loan Scottish midfielder Ewan Henderson got the team off to a good start, with the Hibs loanee scoring his third goal of the season to make it 1-0. Club Brugge loanee Daniel Perez made it 2-0 around 40 minutes in, but Oostende couldn’t hold on to their lead.
Just before half-time, veteran forward Jelle Vossen made it 2-1 from the spot, before grabbing an equaliser shortly after half-time. Pushing for a winner, Zulte Waregem saw their new addition Anthon Tanghe sent off on debut in the 92nd minute. Ironically, the central defender had left Oostende to join Zulte Waregem during the current transfer window. However, deep into added time Oostende could not score from the resulting penalty.
Yet they had one more chance. With a man advantage, Oostende won it late thanks to Mohamed Berte.
Despite the sides struggles, the 21-year-old is having a decent season with three goals and three assists. The side remain bottom and in trouble of ceasing to exist, but at least for this weekend their fans can celebrate a dramatic victory.
