Rangers will face Hibernian at Easter Road on Sunday. With Hearts leading the table and Rangers climbing back into contention, this fixture presents a crucial opportunity for Danny Rohl’s side to close the gap on the table toppers.
The Easter Road side will be without midfielder Josh Mulligan, who suffered an ankle injury during the Scottish Cup loss to Dunfermline last weekend and is expected to be sidelined for several weeks. Midfielder Josh Campbell remains absent due to an ongoing hamstring problem.
Chris Cadden also remains out of this fixture due to his calf injury, which will keep him out until mid-February, and Warren O’Hara as well (groin injury), who will be sidelined for the same duration.
Rangers will be without Bailey Rice, Connor Barron, Derek Cornelius, and Dujon Sterling due to injury problems.
However, goalkeeper Jack Butland, who has been instrumental in Rangers’ defensive resurgence, is expected to feature prominently in this encounter. Since Rohl’s arrival, Rangers have improved significantly in both defensive and attacking metrics, with Butland’s performances earning particular praise from Sky Sports analysts.
Rohl is expected to revert to the side that secured a convincing 3-0 victory against Dundee last weekend, with the Porto match having served as an opportunity to rest some key personnel.
The Rangers boss has emphasised tactical flexibility and adaptability during his tenure, implementing a system that allows players to operate in hybrid roles depending on match situations.
After an inconsistent start to the season, David Gray’s side mounted an impressive recovery, winning eight of their last 16 fixtures and climbing to fifth place in the Scottish Premiership with 35 points from 23 games.
However, last weekend’s comprehensive defeat to Falkirk has dented their confidence and prompted Gray to address his squad’s standards.
Danny Rohl has orchestrated a remarkable turnaround at Ibrox since replacing Russell Martin in October. Rangers now sit second in the Scottish Premiership with 47 points from 23 games, just seven points behind leaders Hearts with one match in hand and maintaining an impressive unbeaten run in the league.
Their recent form has been exceptional, with six consecutive league victories and just one defeat in their last 18 league fixtures.
