Leeds United have seen off competition from a number of clubs to agree a deal with free agent winger Harry Wilson, with a ‘higher salary’ factor coming into play, according to journalist David Ornstein.

Wilson’s current contract at Fulham runs out at the end of the month and he is leaving Craven Cottage as a free agent.

The Wales winger’s situation alerted a host of sides and there has been substantial interest in securing his signature.

Along with Leeds, Aston Villa have shown keen interest in Wilson, while even earlier this week Turkish giants Trabzonspor were in talks with his agent.

Leeds though look to have made the most compelling case and Wilson will be playing his football at Elland Road next season.

It marks a pleasing conclusion for the Leeds recruitment team, who tried to sign Wilson in last summer’s transfer window and almost got a deal over the line.

Fulham eventually refused to sign off on the agreement on deadline day, leading to Wilson’s move to Leeds to collapse.

Leeds now have their man and it has emerged that part of what saw them win the race amid his expiring Fulham contract was the offer of a ‘long-term deal with a higher salary’.

The Whites look to have made a substantial financial commitment to the 29-year-old in a sign of just how much they wanted him at the club.

Wilson is now set to undergo a medical with Leeds ahead of signing on the dotted line.

Leeds even tried to sign Wilson in the summer of 2020, when Victor Orta was overseeing transfers, but Liverpool’s asking price scared the Whites off.

Daniel Farke found joy with free agents last summer as he landed Lukas Nmecha and Dominic Calvert-Lewin, with Nmecha scoring Leeds’ first goal of the Premier League campaign and Calvert-Lewin their last.

With the Whites having admitted the Premier League’s new Squad Cost Ratio rules will have an impact on their summer transfer window outlay, landing Wilson without paying a fee is a welcome boost.

Another free agent Leeds are in for is Julian Brandt and Inside Futbol looked at all the skills he would bring to Elland Road recently.
