Italy will face Belgium in the Under-17 European Championship Final after beating Spain on penalties, with goalkeeper Christian Lupo the hero three times.
Lecce youth team player Lupo had already made the difference on 29 minutes when parrying the penalty from Imga following a Bonifazi foul.
Daniele Franceschini’s Azzurrini had instead taken the lead from the spot through Croci in the first half following a Mario Diaz handling offence.
Enzo Alves came so close to an equaliser with his header off the crossbar from a corner, but moments later a loose ball fell at the feet of Urrestarazu to tap in and draw Spain level.
At 1-1, it went directly to a penalty shoot-out, and Italy emerged triumphant thanks again to the heroics of Lupo.
He saved two spot-kicks from Mencia and Enzo Alves, while Italy converted all four of their attempts to sweep through to the Final.
That will be against Belgium on Sunday June 7, kicking off at the Lillekula Staadion in Tallinn at 18.00 UK time (19.00 CEST).
The Azzurri already won the European Under-17 tournament in 2024, reaching the Final in 2013, 2018 and 2019.
