The future of Max Eberl remains one of the dominant topics at FC Bayern. Ever since Uli Hoeneß publicly put the chances of the sporting director’s contract being extended at just „60:40“, the 52-year-old’s position has been the subject of intense debate. Now TV pundit Marcel Reif has also commented on the situation – and made a clear assumption
There is no question that Hoeneß‘ statements have not been without consequences. The honorary president’s public assessment shortly before the DFB Cup final caused a stir both internally and externally and fueled speculation about a possible ultimatum for Eberl
In the BILD programme„Reif ist live“, Marcel Reif made it clear that the current development does not surprise him at all. „When the patron tells you publicly on the day of the cup final that your chances are 60:40 and not 96:4, then you know that they still want to see a few things from you,“ explained the long-time commentator
According to Reif, the assessment of Eberl’s work will be based primarily on the coming weeks on the transfer market
The 76-year-old sees three areas in particular that Bayern’s sporting director must successfully resolve
Firstly, there is the future of Alexander Nübel. Following his return from VfB Stuttgart, the goalkeeper has no sporting prospects in Munich. Bayern is therefore looking for a permanent solution
Then there is the search for a backup for Harry Kane, a task that is proving more complicated than initially assumed. The player sought must have sufficient quality, but at the same time accept that he is usually only second choice behind the English superstar

The third important point Reif mentions is Min-jae Kim. The South Korean has been linked with a possible departure for weeks. A sale would not only generate income, but also relieve the salary structure
„Sell Alexander Nübel, find someone who has to line up behind Harry Kane 99.9 per cent of the time and find a solution for Min-jae Kim,“ said Reif, summarizing the tasks
At the same time, the TV pundit made it clear that Eberl has long been working on these issues: „I think he is working on fulfilling the ultimatum.“
Irrespective of the specific personnel matters, Reif believes that the situation within the Bayern management is not completely smooth sailing at the moment. „There’s a lot going on,“ said the Swiss, referring to the special requirements of the German record champions
For him, it was clear that Eberl, as sporting director, was responsible for the sporting development and had to face up to this assessment
According to current reports, the supervisory board will once again discuss the future of the sporting director at the end of August, when a comprehensive analysis of the summer transfer window is likely to take place
Until then, Eberl has the opportunity to convince his critics that successful transfers, important sales and a clear squad structure could strengthen his position in the long term
However, one thing is certain: the pressure on the Bayern sporting director is unlikely to ease in the coming weeks. This summer’s personnel decisions could play a decisive role in determining how things will continue for him at Säbener Straße beyond 2027.
