Hollywood actor Will Ferrell is set to be announced as co-owner of Leeds United after joining high-profile backers of the US firm that bought the club last summer.

According to widespread reports on Sunday, Ferrell has purchased a “significant” minority shareholding and will join fellow Hollywood star Russell Crowe, golfer Jordan Spieth and record-breaking Olympian Michael Phelps as investors in 49ers Enterprises.

The 56-year-old star of such movies as Anchorman and Elf is already co-owner of Major League Soccer club Los Angeles FC, and is said to have fallen in love with English football, and Leeds in particular.

“The 49ers will be announcing his involvement in the coming days and he’s looking forward to sprinkling a little stardust on the club,” a source told The Sun.

“He loves soccer and has been particularly impressed by the passion of the English game. And his aim now is to see Leeds back where they belong – in the Premier League. As far as Will and the 49ers are concerned, this is a serious investment opportunity.”

Defeat to Southampton on Saturday saw Leeds miss out on automatic promotion from the Championship, but Daniel Farke’s side could still return to the Premier League via the play-offs, and will take on Norwich City in their semi-final next week.
