It was a special occasion today (Tuesday) for Jim Craig, and his wife, Elisabeth as the Lisbon Lion was presented with his OBE at a special ceremony in Holyrood Palace, Edinburgh.
Jim was part of the most famous team in Celtic’s history, one of the 11 men who, on May 25, 1967, beat Inter Milan in Lisbon’s Estadio Nacional to win the European Cup – the first British team to do so.
And last weekend, he returned to Portugal for a special ceremony to officially open an exhibition in the access tunnel to the Estadio Nacional, 'From Glasgow to Glory – Celtic's 1967 European Triumph in Jamor, Lisbon' (History of a Victory – The Lisbon Lions), dedicated to Celtic’s memorable 1967 European Cup triumph.
Jim joined Celtic back in 1963, combining life as a footballer with his studies at university, where he was training to be a dentist, before becoming a full-time professional footballer in 1965.
And his trophy haul was an impressive one, winning seven league titles, four Scottish Cups, three League Cups and, of course, the European Cup in 1967. He also gained one cap for Scotland.
After he hung up his boots, Jim continued working as a dentist, while also pursuing a successful career in the media as a commentator and pundit, and he has also written a number of Celtic books. Now an ambassador of the club, Jim continues to be a regular presence at Celtic Park on a matchday.
At the time the award was first announced, the Lisbon Lion said: “I am highly delighted and humbled to receive my OBE in recognition of my services to Scottish football and charity.
“My sincere thanks to those who supported this award and my continued love to all the supporters worldwide."
