As May turned to June in 2026, the sporting world moved a little closer to the edge of its seat. We are, of course, referring to the imminent onset of the FIFA World Cup. The big kick off on 11 June is circled in the diaries of football fans and punters at the best new betting sites UK. 48 teams, 104 games…summer 2026 should be one to remember.
Every nation will hope to excel at the World Cup, but three of the 48 sides have an additional reason to impress. For the first time in history, three nations host the World Cup, with the opening game in Mexico on 11 June and the final in the USA on 19 July.
For Canada, Mexico, and the USA, the 2026 World Cup represents the chance to delight their home fans on the biggest stage:
FIFA World Ranking (June 2026): 30 Manager: Jesse Marsch Group Opposition: Switzerland (19), Qatar (57), Bosnia (64) Best World Cup Performance: Group Stage (1986, 2022)
Under Jesse Marsch, Canada have adopted the high-pressing style that the 52-year-old successfully employed at the Red Bulls of New York, Salzburg, and Leipzig.
Star man Jonathan David was a big hit at Lille but is yet to hit those heights following his switch to Juventus in Serie A. Nevertheless, his record of 39 goals in 76 appearances for Canada merits the utmost respect, and he enjoys great chemistry with fellow standout, skipper Alphonso Davies.
With their all-action style, Canada will be a tough matchup for all three Group B opponents, and if FIFA World Rankings are any guide, they have a solid chance of progressing to the knockout stage.
FIFA World Ranking (June 2026): 14 Manager: Javier Aguirre Group Opposition: Czechia (39), South Africa (60), South Korea (25) Best World Cup Performance: Quarter-Finals (1970, 1986)
Back for a third spell in the hot seat, 67-year-old Javier Aguirre is the oldest manager at the finals.
Under Aguirre’s guidance at the 2002 World Cup, Mexico topped a Group containing Italy, before losing to the USA in the Last 16. It was a similar story in Aguirre’s second attempt in 2010, when Mexico qualified from their Group but lost to Argentina in the Last 16. Progressing beyond the Group stage should be the minimum ambition this time around.
35-year-old Raul Jimenez is the biggest goal threat and keep an eye out for 17-year-old sensation Gilberto Mora. At the other end of the pitch, veteran keeper Guillermo Ochoa is set to appear at his sixth World Cup finals.
FIFA World Ranking (June 2026): 17 Manager: Mauricio Pochettino Group Opposition: Paraguay (40), Australia (27), Turkey (22) Best World Cup Performance: Third Place (1930)
With two sides inside the top 30 and a dangerous Paraguay outfit, the USA arguably face the toughest assignment of the home nations. However, they have one of the most highly regarded coaches in the game to help navigate these tricky waters.
“Captain America” Christian Pulisic remains an elite-level creative influence on his day, and a strong supporting cast includes Timothy Weah, Weston McKennie and Monaco hitman Folarin Balogun.
Having made it to the Last 16 the last time the World Cup was held on US soil, this attacking squad looks well-placed to match that performance.
It would be a surprise if Canada, Mexico, or the USA join Uruguay (1930), Italy (1934), England (1966), West Germany (1974), Argentina (1978), and France (1998) in winning the World Cup as a host nation. However, all three will hope to at least progress to the knockout phase.
From a neutral standpoint, a deep run by a home nation always adds a little extra to what is already one of sport’s greatest spectacles.
