Still getting to grips with the players at his disposal, it seems Ruben Amorim is yet to nail down his most effective starting XI.

The Manchester United boss is learning the hard way that he’s now navigating one of football’s most impossible jobs. Getting this crop of players to succeed consistently and perform week in, week out is akin to getting blood from a stone.

Yesterday’s showing at home to Bournemouth was nothing short of deflating for fans. The 20-time champions of England being played off the park and dominated on their home turf by a team that finished 12th last season just highlights the kind of level United are competing at in this day and age.

They will spend Christmas in the bottom half of the table for the first time in Premier League history, and at no point this term could you have really made a case for them being deserving of a higher place. It’s entirely reflective of the dismal showings they’ve produced.

Amorim must learn from each of the mistakes he’s witnessing from the touchline and adapt accordingly. He did so yesterday, but it was, unfortunately, a case of too little, too late.

Joshua Zirkzee berated after blunder for Bournemouth’s opener

Joshua Zirkzee was branded ‘absolutely hopeless’ after he allowed 19-year-old Dean Huijsen to outmuscle him and beat him to the ball from a set piece. He let the youngster latch on to a free header and swiftly convert it past Andre Onana, breaking the deadlock on the half-hour mark.

Shortly after the interval, the Netherlands international again lost an aerial duel and was consequently immediately substituted in place of Rasmus Hojlund. Samuel Luckhurst shared: “Amorim decided to take Zirkzee off after he lost an aerial duel. United get a corner, and he orders Hojlund on before it’s taken.”

Zirkzee, who cost United £36.5 million when he signed from Bologna in July, has recorded four goals in 25 appearances across all competitions thus far.
