Manchester United have suffered a financial setback ahead of the 2025/26 season as global hotel giant Marriott International has opted not to renew its sponsorship agreement with the club.
The Red Devils had been partnered with Marriott since 2019, offering fans unique experiences such as stays in a bespoke suite at Old Trafford and opportunities to redeem loyalty points for club-related rewards.
However, the world’s largest hotel company has now pulled out, citing internal cost-cutting measures.
The decision comes despite Marriott recently renewing a deal with the Football Association and maintaining its sponsorship of the Mercedes Formula One team.
United, for their part, have downplayed the impact of Marriott’s departure.
Club sources stated they were “proud of their successful partnership with Marriott” and insisted the club still boasts one of the most attractive sponsorship portfolios in world football.
The timing of the announcement is noteworthy. In March, United controversially opted not to book a hotel ahead of their away fixture against Everton, instead travelling from Carrington on the morning of the game.
In contrast, United did secure hotel accommodation for a later away trip to Chelsea in May, and some players have since voiced dissatisfaction with the quality of hotels used during other trips, such as the stay in Bucharest.
In those cases, United chose Marriott hotels over more luxurious alternatives, in line with their sponsorship obligations.
While fans are unlikely to sympathise with player complaints given Marriott’s generally high standards, the close timing between these logistical decisions and the sponsorship’s termination has not gone unnoticed.
Losing a major global partner like Marriott at a time when cost efficiency and player satisfaction are under scrutiny adds another layer of complexity to the club’s preparations for the coming campaign.
Whether United will seek a direct replacement or diversify their commercial strategy remains to be seen, but the end of this high-profile partnership signals a shifting landscape in the club’s off-pitch affairs.
