Hotel rates across the 16 host cities for the 2026 World Cup have surged, with the steepest jump reaching 2,373%. According to The Athletic, prices are up by several hundred dollars per night in the United States, Canada and Mexico.

The standout example is a Mexico City room that cost $157, about €135, in late May, but was listed at $3,882, about €3,330, on 10 and 11 June for the opening match between Mexico and South Africa on the Marriott Bonvoy app.

Average nightly rates during the tournament come in at $1,013, compared with $293 for the same rooms three weeks before the start in mid-May 2026, an increase of 328%.

Across the Mexican host hotels, the average rise is 610%. Mexico City has seen the biggest citywide jump, with the average night moving from $172 to $1,572, a rise of 961%. Toronto records the smallest change, up 78%.

Price spikes around major events are common. During the Paris 2024 Olympics, the French capital saw a 141% increase in room rates compared with the same period a year earlier.
