Arsenal’s 2-1 defeat at Manchester City has tightened the Premier League title race, with five matches remaining. The two sides could finish level on points after 38 games, meaning tiebreakers would decide the champion.
Arsenal remain top on 70 points, three clear of City on 67, and City have a game in hand. L'Équipe notes how the Premier League would split them if needed.
First comes goal difference, currently favouring Arsenal at +37 over City’s +36. Next is goals scored, which for now favours City, 65 to 63. Third is head-to-head points, with City having taken four against Arsenal.
If those first three measures ended level after 38 games, Manchester City would be crowned champions.
Had Sunday finished 1-1, as in the reverse fixture, the next step would have been away goals in the head-to-head, one apiece. A neutral-ground play-off would then have been required to decide the title, something the Premier League has never staged.
