Frank Lampard’s side have been brilliant so far this season, and they demonstrated their attacking quality when Ephron Mason-Clark finished superbly from a clever Tatsuhiro Sakamoto ball after 22 minutes.

However, Wrexham always looked a threat, and they turned the game on its head thanks to a second half hat-trick from Kieffer Moore, with the Sky Blues sure to be disappointed at how they failed to stop the big striker.

Despite a great late strike from Sakamoto, Coventry couldn’t find an equaliser, so they tasted defeat in the Championship for the first time since May.

The trip to Wales was always going to be difficult for Coventry, and they weren’t helped by an injury crisis that robbed Lampard of several key players.

The highly influential Jack Rudoni remains out for the Midlands outfit, whilst Bobby Thomas missed out with a slight calf problem, and his absence was felt as they struggled to cope with Moore’s physicality.

Elsewhere, Milan van Ewijk had to watch on due to serving a one-game suspension, and Jay Dasilva and Victor Torp were only fit to start from the bench.

So, Lampard was forced to make changes, and even though he wouldn’t use that as an excuse, it’s fair to say that many fans felt it was a factor, as they questioned whether the squad has enough quality to cope with a few injuries…

Elsewhere, another supporter pointed out that such changes in defence meant it was always going to be difficult for the team - which proved to be the case.

Thomas' absence was highlighted by this fan, with the ex-Barnsley man having been very commanding in both boxes for Coventry, and they lacked that physicality at times against Wrexham.

Finally, one fan pointed out that any team in the Championship would struggle if you took out five players from their best XI.

Coventry City's players didn't take their chance against Wrexham

This was a rare subpar performance from Coventry, so it's important not to overreact, and you can be sure that Lampard's attention has already turned to the Sheffield United game on Tuesday.

Plus, it should be said that most of the team were poor against Wrexham, with Sakamoto arguably the only Coventry player who was at his best.

So, it would be unfair to single out the players who came in as the reason for the defeat.

Nevertheless, the likes of Jake Bidwell and Luke Woolfenden didn't do themselves any favours with how they performed, and Coventry supporters have clearly picked up on their poor showings on Friday night.

City also lacked a lot going forward, and it was telling that Lampard replaced Haji Wright and Brandon Thomas-Asante at the same time with 67 minutes on the clock - shortly after the Wrexham equaliser and just prior to them taking the lead.

These bad nights happen in football though, especially in the Championship, in a league that is so relentless and unforgiving, and Lampard is experienced enough to know it's about how you react.
