Sheffield Wednesday goalkeeper Ethan Horvath is not expected to extend his stay at Hillsborough once his loan spell comes to an end in January.

That's according to SBI Soccer, who claim that sources close to the player have confirmed that Horvath's loan with Wednesday will not be renewed once it expires next month.

Horvath was one of only two new signings the Owls made during their troubled summer transfer window as he arrived on a short-term loan from Cardiff City, with the EFL giving the club permission to complete a deal for the 30-year-old after Pierce Charles suffered a shoulder injury, which left them with no senior goalkeepers.

The US international has made 16 appearances for Wednesday so far this season, but he has conceded 30 goals and kept just two clean sheets in those matches, as well as being sent off for a reckless challenge in the 2-1 defeat at Charlton Athletic in October.

With Charles back to full fitness, Horvath lost his place in the starting line-up in the Owls' abandoned game at Blackburn Rovers on Saturday, and it seems he may now be set to depart Hillsborough in January.

Horvath was part of the Cardiff squad that suffered relegation from the Championship last season, and after being deemed surplus to requirements by new Bluebirds head coach Brian Barry-Murphy in the summer, he was allowed to join Wednesday on loan in August.

The American made a strong start to his Owls career as he saved two penalties in a memorable shootout victory over Premier League side Leeds United in the EFL Cup, as well as making a number of crucial stops during the game.

However, Horvath was unable to maintain those early standards, and he has made a number of costly errors for Wednesday in recent months, while his red card at Charlton in October meant that the club had to dip into the transfer market again to bring in another emergency loan in Bristol City's Joe Lumley.

Owls manager Henrik Pedersen defended Horvath from supporter criticism after he was blamed for two of the goals in his side's 3-1 defeat at Southampton last month, claiming that the goalkeeper had performed "much better than we could have expected" and insisting that "his general level has increased a lot".

Despite Charles only playing one Under-21 game after over three months on the sidelines, he was thrown straight back into the team against Blackburn on Saturday, and unless he sustains another injury in the coming weeks, it looks as though Horvath may have played his last game for Wednesday.

As he prepares to leave the Owls, SBI Soccer claim that Horvath is keen to return to his native America in January, and with the likes of the New York Red Bulls, LA Galaxy, Orlando City and Minnesota United all currently searching for new goalkeepers, there may be an opportunity for him to make the move to the MLS.

Sheffield Wednesday supporters will have mixed Ethan Horvath feelings amid fresh loan update

Given their desperate situation in the summer, Wednesday were never going to be able to attract a particularly high standard of goalkeeper to cover for Charles during his absence, and while he has been guilty of conceding plenty of soft goals, Horvath has also made his fair share of important saves for the club.

As he proved with a strong performance in the 1-1 draw at Watford on Tuesday night, Charles is a significant upgrade on Horvath, and Pedersen will certainly be pleased to have his highly-rated number one back available, but the Dane will also be grateful to the Cardiff loanee for stepping up when the Owls needed him.

Given that Horvath is unlikely to receive any more game time at Hillsborough, it makes sense for all parties not to extend his loan deal in January, but if he does depart, Wednesday will be hoping that they are able to bring in a replacement, otherwise they will be left a little light in the goalkeeping department.
