Hannah Hampton lifts Euro 2025 trophy after crucial saves in penalty shootout against Spain
Hannah Hampton played a pivotal role in England’s Euro 2025 success this summer but it wasn’t just her shot stopping that impressed for the Lionesses.
The Chelsea goalkeeper was one of the best ball-playing goalkeepers at the tournament according to a new Euro 2025 technical report.
There was no doubting Hannah Hampton’s goalkeeping prowess this summer for England.
The Lionesses new number one managed to step into the large void that Mary Earps left after retiring from international football with some stamp of authority.
Hampton was the hero for England on more than one occasion in Switzerland. The 24-year-old played a key role in two penalty shootouts during the knockouts and her shot-stopping ability was something to marvel at throughout the tournament.
But it wasn’t just her shot stopping that helped England to their second consecutive European Championship.
According to a new UEFA Euro 2025 technical report, Hampton had the longest average first pass of any goalkeeper at the tournament.

Hampton’s kicks weren’t just long though – they were accurate too.
For England’s first goal against Netherlands in the group stage, Hampton pumped a long ball up the field to Alessia Russo.
The ball sliced through the Dutch defence and found Russo in acres of space on the edge of the box. The Arsenal forward played a short ball to Lauren James who found the top corner from range with a stunning strike.
James’ goal was just one example of how Hampton was able to get the Lionesses on the front foot at Euro 2025 and it certainly wasn’t the only time she did it.
36 of Hampton’s 48 goal kicks at the Euros went over 40m, showing England’s desire to get up the field as quick as possible.
Once again in the final Hampton’s distribution was a key factor. The Lionesses targeted Lauren Hemp on the left wing with long balls as the Manchester City winger was believed to have an edge in her head to head against the much shorter Olga Carmona.
After such a successful year with Chelsea and England, Hannah Hampton was awarded with the Yashin trophy in September.
Hampton picked up her award at the Ballon d’Or ceremony becoming the first-ever winner.
With England, Hampton won the Euros for a second consecutive time but for the first time as a starter.
In domestic football Hampton was equally dominant. Chelsea are unbeaten in 29 WSL games and Hampton won the WSL Golden Glove during that run last season, with 18 clean sheets in 34 games.
