Football League World takes a look at what Sean Morrison is up to these days...

Sean Morrison was once among the most formidable central defenders at Championship level, having enjoyed an illustrious eight-year stay with Cardiff City.

Morrison joined Cardiff in the summer of 2014 following their relegation from the Premier League, with then-manager Ole Gunnar Solskjær reportedly shelling out £3m to Reading for his services. Despite going on to manage Manchester United, the Norewigan had many faults during his brief and unsuccessful reign at the Cardiff City Stadium.

Signing Morrison, however, proved to be a real masterstroke and undoubtedly his finest business with the Bluebirds.

Up until the 2021/22 campaign, which was curtailed by injury, Morrison made at least 30 appearances across seven seasons with Cardiff both in the Championship and the Premier League.

The defender quickly established himself as a fan favourite and went on to captain the side for many years, providing the leadership, imperious defensive qualities and an almighty set-piece threat to spearhead their shock promotion to the top-flight in 2018.

Morrison scored on seven occasions that term, but his finest personal hour came as he chopped past future Bluebird Harry Wilson after running the length of the pitch before slotting away coolly to net the second of his two goals away at Hull City. That fixture, of course, remains etched in Bluebirds folklore as it all-but-secured their return to the Premier League after a four-year absence.

Morrison's Cardiff career came to an unfortunate end when he ruptured his ACL in an away fixture at Barnsley in 2022. With his contract up at the end of that season, the formerBluebirds skipper never represented Cardiff again.

However, Football League World has decided to take a look at what Morrison has been up to in recent times.

Sean Morrison's time at Rotherham United

Morrison joined Rotherham United in January 2023, having not played in nearly a year at the time. He played just twice for Rotherham throughout the second half of the 2022/23 campaign as they impressively secured Championship survival and stayed on for the following season.

The 33-year-old was a regular for the Millers last season, featuring on 27 occasions. Unfortunately for Morrison, the Millers were relegated to League One with just 27 points to their name, representing one of the worst seasons in Championship history.

His only goal of the season came in a 2-2 draw with Blackburn Rovers back in January, and he was part of a backline which leaked more goals than all of their divisional counterparts with 89, although that is certainly not just a blot on Morrison's record.

Morrison linked up with former Cardiff teammates in Dillon Phillips and Jordan Hugill at the New York Stadium as well as on-loan Bluebirds midfielder Andy Rinomhota, but he was unavailable for his ex-side's visit to South Yorkshire on the final day of the season - where they were defeated 5-2.

Cardiff City legend Sean Morrison is currently without a club

At the time of writing, Morrison remains a free agent following the conclusion of the summer transfer window. The veteran defender was among a host of players released by the Millers upon their relegation to the third-tier and is yet to find a new club.

According to BristolLive, Morrison was training with Bristol Rovers - who are managed by ex-Millers boss Matt Taylor - earlier in the summer in what could have represented something of a coup for the Gas.

However, for one reason or another, Morrison eventually failed to earn a potential deal and will surely be hoping for any League One teams to take a punt on him as a free acquisition in the coming weeks and months.
