Derby County remain in a perilous position in terms of their long-term future at the moment with the Rams still looking to find a buyer for the club after entering administration.

Mel Morris’ ownership of the club and time with them before he became the sole owner will be remembered for the years of failed attempts to try and get the Rams promoted out of the Championship.

During that time the club as it has turned out often spent well beyond their means to try and pursue that elusive Premier League place.

The 2014/15 season was an example of a season where Derby were expected to be amongst the promotion challenges. That came after they were denied a place in the Premier League thanks to a defeat against ten-man QPR in the play-off final the previous campaign.

However, Steve McClaren’s side inexplicably failed to even reach the play-offs that season despite them having spent most of the campaign up amongst the top end of the division. That was thanks to a run of just two wins in their last 13 games.

One player that the Rams signed in the summer of 2014 ahead of that season was Omar Mascarell with him arriving on a loan deal from Real Madrid.

Mascarell was able to make 18 starts for Derby in the Championship in the middle of the park during his loan spell with the club and 23 appearances in the league in total.

He often did fail to get into the side ahead of the likes of George Thorne, Jeff Hendrick, Craig Bryson, John Eustace and Will Hughes.

When he did feature though he did show glimpses of his talent and ability on the ball, but it was perhaps not enough for what Derby needed during that campaign.

Following his exit from Derby and return to Real Madrid, Mascarell made another loan move to Sporting Gijon in La Liga. The midfielder made 26 league appearances for them in the 2015/16 season and helped them just about survive the drop by a single point.

In the summer of 2016, Eintracht Frankfurt made the decision to bring Mascarell in from Real Madrid on a permanent deal on a three-year contract.

The midfielder managed to make 28 league appearances to help his new side to an 11th place finish and also helped them reach the final of the DFB Pokal.

The 2017/18 season saw Mascarell ruled out for most of the campaign with him having suffered an Achilles tendon injury. He did make 12 appearances in all competitons in which he scored twice and he also featured in their 3-1 win against Bayern Munich in the final of the DFB Pokal.

Following his impact at Frankfurt, Real Madrid decided to activate their buy-back clause on his contract in the summer of 2018. They then sold the midfielder on to Schalke in the same transfer window for a profit.

Mascarell spent the last three seasons with Schalke where he was at times a crucial member of the side, and at others found it hard to get himself into the side.

However, he will be remembered by the German club as being part of a squad that ultimately got them relegated out of the Bundesliga last season.

After making 71 appearances in all competitions for Schalke, Mascarell left the club as a free agent in the summer and he is now with La Liga outfit Elche having joined them on a one-year deal.

He has so far made five league appearances for them in the Spanish top-flight this term without scoring as of yet.
