Jamie Vardy has been linked with a return to Leicester City in recent months

Leicester City and Sheffield Wednesday are both preparing for life in League One after finishing in the bottom three this season.

The pair were both relegated from the Championship in a disastrous campaign, with both teams suffering points deductions.

The Owls went into administration in October, and lost a lot of key players through the year, leaving them with a limited squad that struggled to compete.

Meanwhile, Martí Cifuentes was dismissed in January after a poor run of form and Gary Rowett was unable to steer the team in the right direction, leading to them falling to 23rd in the table.

The two clubs will be targeting promotion next season, as they look to get back to their former glory.

And they could end up competing for the same signings this summer before a possible promotion battle once the season gets underway, with the two teams already linked with a deal for Jamie Vardy.

Vardy left Leicester 12 months ago to join Cremonese, but speculation has mounted on a potential return to the King Power Stadium.

However, the forward has claimed that his time with the Foxes is over, closing the door on a second stint with the League One side.

He added that he will always support the team and keep up with how they are doing, but that he doesn’t have an interest in playing for the club again any time soon.

“Nah, that’s gone,” said Vardy, via Jamie Vardy’s Having A Party podcast.

“I’ll always support them and follow them, that’s the best thing I can do now.”

It was reported last month that figures inside Sheffield Wednesday have discussed the possibility of seeking a deal to sign Vardy now that he is a free agent.

The striker is a childhood supporter of the Owls, although it remains unclear whether he’d be ready to take the step down to League One at this stage of his career.

The 39-year-old contributed seven goals and two assists in Serie A this season, and scored nine times in the Premier League in his final campaign with Leicester.

Cremonese finished 18th in the Italian top flight, with the club suffering relegation as a consequence.

Vardy originally signed for Leicester in 2012, and he spent 13 years with the Foxes to cement himself as a club legend.

He won the Premier League in 2016, and the FA Cup in 2021, becoming their most successful ever player.

However, his time at the King Power came to an end in 2025 with the team suffering relegation to the Championship.

Jamie Vardy move would be sensational for Sheffield Wednesday

Vardy has yet to decide his future, and he has also been linked with the likes of Feyenoord, so it’s far from certain he’ll be moving to Sheffield Wednesday.

But he would be a sensational addition for the new owners Arise Capital, and would be a real boost to the first team squad.

The veteran forward has shown in the last two years that he can still compete to a pretty solid top flight standard, so bringing him to League One could be a real boost to their ambitions to compete for promotion.

Given his support of the club, that could prove crucial to convincing him to make that switch this summer with the door now closed to Leicester.
