The Owls loanee has opened up about his future at Hillsborough.

It was further disappointment for Sheffield Wednesday last weekend as they were narrowly beaten by Derby County at Pride Park.

The Owls fell behind inside the opening 11 minutes to Ben Brereton Diaz, before pulling themselves level just six minutes later through Jerry Yates.

But on the stroke of half-time, central defender Matt Clarke put the hosts back in front, with his effort enough to ensure the Rams earned all three points and carried on their play-off push.

For Wednesday, it was a 12th successive defeat in the Championship, while they have failed to taste victory since late September 2025 over Portsmouth.

And with their League One status already sealed for next season, it’s all about seeing out the remainder of this term with pride and giving the supporters something to shout about.

But it is yet to happen, with Wednesday just not having enough in the squad to get over the line in games and get more points on the board.

One player who is starting to create some positivity though is forward Jerry Yates, who is currently with Wednesday on loan from Luton Town.

His close-range headed goal against Derby made it two goals in as many games, adding to his tally after getting off the mark in blue and white against Southampton.

Playing almost a combined 300 appearances across the Championship and League One, Owls supporters would surely be delighted to see the 29-year-old move to Yorkshire on a permanent deal, with him surely being a coup of an addition in the third tier when he is still able to find the back of the net in the Championship.

And Yates himself has responded to the speculation over a permanent deal unfolding this summer, revealing to BBC Radio Sheffield that it would be “sensational” to play in front of the Wednesday support every week.

Speaking to BBC Radio Sheffield and reported by The Star, Jerry Yates refused to rule out a permanent move to Sheffield Wednesday from Luton Town this summer, but did admit he is still in the dark over what club he will be playing for next season.

Yates said: “Listen, it’s a tough situation. I have got two years left on my contract at Luton.

“I will go back to them in the summer, re-evaluate, sit down and speak. Whether it be with them or whether it be elsewhere, I don’t know yet.

“But listen, to be playing in front of fans like that every week would be sensational.”

Jerry Yates would be a superb addition in League One for Sheffield Wednesday

Throughout his career, Jerry Yates has been a reliable goalscorer when leading the line.

And ever since he came to Sheffield Wednesday, he’s been a regular starter under Henrik Pedersen, and now he’s up to full fitness, the goals are starting to follow.

He’s already built up an excellent relationship with the supporters, and they will be desperate for someone of his caliber to join in the long-term and help get Wednesday back into the Championship as quickly as possible.

And it’s certain that his goals will be vital, with Yates scoring 10 times in the second tier last season with Derby, while he netted 20 times in the 2020-21 campaign for Blackpool when he last played regularly in League One.

While it hasn’t quite clicked at Luton and led to his move to Wednesday, Yates looks a lot more settled with regular game-time, so hopefully the Owls can convince him to join their project back down in League One and help ensure that this massive club isn’t stuck in the doldrums of the third tier for any longer than it has to.
