According to Dutch journalist Joost Blaauwhof, the Tractor Boys are keen on signing the forward ahead of the 2 February deadline.

The Suffolk outfit are in the mix for automatic promotion to the Premier League this season, but are currently outside of the top two.

Kieran McKenna is keen to bolster his attacking options, with the club eyeing an immediate return to the top flight after coming 19th in the division in the previous campaign.

Piroe was a key figure in Daniel Farke’s side as they earned promotion at Elland Road last season, scoring 19 times from 46 appearances in the Championship.

Ipswich have made an offer to sign Piroe this January amid his lack of game time under Farke in the Premier League.

However, it’s believed that the Dutchman does not view taking a step down to the second tier as the right development for his career at this point.

The 26-year-old has proven himself at a Championship level, scoring 32 times and assisting 10 goals during his time in the second tier with Leeds.

McKenna is keen to get a deal for Piroe over the line before the 2 February deadline next Monday, but the forward is looking to fight for his place at Elland Road.

It’s understood that a deal is not currently on the cards, although things could change in the coming days.

Ipswich suffered defeat to Sheffield United last weekend, leaving them five points adrift of second place Middlesbrough, albeit with a game in hand.

Next up for the Tractor Boys is a home clash against Preston North End on 31 January in a 3pm kick-off.

Joel Piroe target looks a long shot for Ipswich

Piroe would no doubt be an excellent signing for Ipswich if they could get it over the line, but they may have to move onto other targets for the time being.

The Suffolk outfit could use a consistent goal scorer, and that kind of player could make a huge difference in the battle for automatic promotion.

But if he is unwilling to move down to the second tier, then time is running out for McKenna’s team to explore alternatives.

With the market closing on Monday, Ipswich are leaving it late making this move in the window, and if they’d been better prepared then maybe they could’ve avoided this late scramble to add another striker.
