FLW takes a look at what Windass was reportedly earning with the Owls, and compares that with his reported Red Dragons salary.
Josh Windass made the switch from Sheffield Wednesday to Wrexham last summer following behind the scenes issues at Hillsborough.
It was reported that the forward’s departure from the Owls came through the termination of his contract amid the late payment of wages on multiple occasions.
The 31-year-old was a key figure for the Yorkshire outfit prior to his departure, with his 13 goals in the campaign prior helping the side finish 12th in the Championship table.
But Sheffield Wednesday’s loss was Wrexham’s gain, with Windass joining Phil Parkinson’s team following their promotion to the second tier.
Here we use estimated figures from Capology to compare what the forward was earning at Sheffield Wednesday with his current Wrexham wages…
Windass made the move to Wrexham as a free agent, and was one of many new signings at the Racecourse Ground over the summer.
He scored the team’s first goal at second division level in over 40 years when he converted a penalty in the first half of their opening day clash away at Southampton.
The 31-year-old agreed a three-year contract as part of his switch to the Welsh outfit, which earned him a £15,000 per week wage, as per Capology.
This puts him as an above average earner at the Red Dragons, with the mean wage currently around the £10,000 mark following their heavy summer investment.
However, he is far from being the best paid member of the first team squad, with Kieffer Moore’s £30,000 per week wage giving him that honour.
The Welshman also joined in the summer, signing from Sheffield United after the Blades missed out on promotion success with a play-off final loss to Sunderland.
Conor Coady and Jay Rodriguez are paid £25,000 per week, with Lewis O’Brien’s £17,500-a-week salary making him the only other player earning more than Windass in Parkinson’s side.
Ben Sheaf, Callum Doyle, Matty James, Liberato Cacace and Sam Smith respectively are the other stars currently earning £15,000 per week.
Windass was a crucial part of Danny Rohl’s Owls side last season, with his 13 league goals making him the top scorer in the team.
However, his £20,000 per week wages weren’t enough to make him the top earner at the Owls during the previous campaign.
That honour instead went to Barry Bannan, with the Scot receiving £24,038 per week, as the team earned a 12th place finish in the Championship.
That does, however, mean that if Capology's figures are indeed correct, then Windass is actually earning £5k-a-week less at Wrexham than what he was previously earning at Sheffield Wednesday, which is sure to be highly surprising for many given his move to the financial heavyweights that the Red Dragons are.
His departure has been a big blow for Sheffield Wednesday, who are struggling for form this season, and undoubtedly would've loved to have retained the services of their talismanic attacker beyond the summer had the off the field situation at their club been different.
While Windass did opt to take a pay cut to make the switch to the Racecourse Ground, the financial stability that Wrexham can provide means he knows he will actually be paid on time month to month, which isn't the case at Hillsborough under Dejphon Chansiri.
