Cardoso details how Downs thrashed Remo

Mamelodi Sundowns head coach Miguel Cardoso has shed light on how his team managed to secure a dominant result against Remo Stars last Sunday.

The South African champions annihilated the Nigeria champions with a 5-1 score line in the first leg of the CAF Champions League second preliminary round at MKO Abiola Sports Arena.

Reflecting on the result, the Downs mentor attributed his team's showing to the thorough preparation and study they did on the Nigerian Premier Football League (NPFL) outfit.

“I think any result would have to be produced from the respect that we had in terms of studying Remo Stars very well,” said Cardoso.

"We saw six matches from Remo Stars, not only the two qualifying matches from the previous round in the Champions League.

"But we [also] saw four matches from the championship, I even went to watch last year's match that they played against AS FAR. So, that's the study and commitment you need to have when you play these kinds of matches - it's to go deep on the study of the opponents.

Cardoso went on to stress the importance of thoroughly studying oppositions from less fancied leagues when participating in Africa's elite club competition.

“Of course, there was six different players on the line-up. They brought again the center-back that was injured or didn't play the important game of last year. If you don't study the deep one team like this you can be surprised,” he added.

"You need to give them maximum respect and that's what we did and then my job is to bring the energy to the players so that they follow the program and demand, that's why you saw me very energetic and active on the sidelines as well.
