West Ham and Millwall will both be backed by sold-out away followings at Burnley and Bristol City on the opening weekend of the Championship.

West Ham and Millwall will renew their fierce rivalry for the first time since 2012 when they meet at The Den on September 19.

The 2026/27 Championship will see a host of derby games, with many regarded among the best in Britain, but West Ham's meetings with Millwall are arguably the most eagerly anticipated of the lot.

So, it will be a huge day when the two clash, but there is a lot of football to be played between now and then, and both sides are set for away trips on the opening day.

Nuno Espírito Santo’s side start the season as favourites to win the Championship title, and it’s easy to see why given the quality in the squad, especially as they have managed to retain Jarrod Bowen.

However, they have been handed a very tough test on the opening day, as they make the trip up north to take on Burnley, a side who they were relegated with last season.

Like all clubs who drop from the Premier League, the Clarets will also fancy their chances of returning at the first attempt, and this game is a great opportunity for either side to lay down an early marker.

With Nicky Hayen taking charge of his first Burnley league game, it should be a good atmosphere at Turf Moor, and West Ham have confirmed that they have sold their 2,000 allocation for the fixture.

Meanwhile, the Lions will also face an opponent with a new manager in charge of his first league game, as they travel to Michael Skubala’s Bristol City.

Even after their EFL Cup defeat to Walsall, there is a lot of optimism at Ashton Gate following his appointment, as well as the signings the Robins have made this summer.

So, it will be a tough test for the Lions, but they will have a decent away following for this one. Like the Hammers, Millwall have sold out all the tickets they were given, with 2,018 fans making the trip from the capital to Bristol.

All of those tickets were sold by the end of July, which is very impressive, and it highlights the optimism at Millwall ahead of the opener.

West Ham and Millwall rivalry will be heightened by promotion race

You have to say that both clubs deserve credit for the support they are taking on the opening day, even if it won’t come as a surprise.

As outlined above, this is a great rivalry, and all eyes will be on the game when they meet in September, which is just before the international break.

But, whilst that is a one-off, the reality is that both clubs could also be competing for promotion, which will just add another edge to the rivalry.

Obviously, given their resources, West Ham will not only expect to go up, but they will believe they should be winning the title. But, Millwall were outstanding last season, and even though the play-offs may be a more realistic expectation, the two sides could be battling it out for a place in the Premier League come May.
