Blues defender now has a red card to go with six bookings in Premier League this season
Marc Cucurella is facing his second suspension of the season after he was sent off after the full-time whistle in Chelsea’s win over Brentford.
The left-back was booked deep in stoppage-time for a late challenge on Fabio Carvalho and tensions then boiled over after the match, as both sets of players clashed on the Stamford Bridge pitch.
Cucurella and Brentford striker Kevin Schade appeared to be at the centre of it and the pair were both given a yellow card, with the Chelsea defender then therefore shown a red.
Explaining the incident, the Premier League Match Centre account posted on X: “The referee issued a second yellow card to Cucurella for adopting an aggressive attitude. Schade was also booked for the same offence.”
As it was two yellow cards rather than a straight red, Cucurella will only serve a one-match ban, meaning he is ruled out of Chelsea’s trip to face Everton on Sunday.
It is the second time this season that Enzo Maresca will be without Cucurella due to suspension, with the campaign not even yet at the halfway mark.
The Spaniard picked up five yellows cards in the first seven Premier League matches of the season, triggering a one-match ban to leave him unavailable for the Blues’ defeat to Liverpool at Anfield in October.
Cucurella has since also been booked against Arsenal, leaving him on six bookings this season. Should he reach double figures, he will be hit with a two-match suspension.
