Southampton reignited their rivalry with Portsmouth when they were relegated to the Championship last year.

The two clubs could not be separated in either of their league meetings in 2025/26, as they drew 0-0 at St. Mary’s before a 1-1 at Fratton Park.

However, the Saints had the better campaign, as they reached the play-offs with a fourth-place finish in table.

But John Mousinho’s side earned a moral victory when their Hampshire rivals were expelled from the post-season competition when they were found guilty of breaching the EFL’s rules against spying.

This left Southampton in the second tier, meaning there are at least two more fixtures against each other to look forward to in the coming 12 months.

Here we look at how many season tickets the Saints have sold for next season compared to their rivals Portsmouth

Southampton will have the sixth-biggest stadium of the teams competing in the upcoming Championship campaign.

St. Mary’s is capable of hosting around 32,000 supporters, which is just behind Bramall Lane in the pecking order.

Cardiff City, Derby County and Middlesbrough all also have bigger home grounds, while West Ham’s London Stadium is the biggest with a capacity of around 62,000.

It has been reported that the Saints have sold 15,000 season tickets, with general admission now open for supporters.

That figure is likely to rise, as it only counts the number of renewals they’ve had from last season into next.

Southampton will begin their campaign on 16 August with a trip to face Watford, with their first home game coming on 22 August against Stoke City.

It remains to be seen whether Eckert will still be in charge at that point, with the 33-year-old currently under investigation from the Football Association for his role in the club’s spying scandal.

Mousinho’s side will be aiming to improve on their 18th place finish from last season in the Championship.

Portsmouth are in their third year back in the second tier after winning the League One title in 2024.

But they have finished 16th and 18th in the previous two campaigns, so will want to bolster their squad this summer to avoid slipping into a relegation battle in 2027.

The Hampshire outfit confirmed at the end of June that they have sold out their allocation of season tickets for next season.

Portsmouth have a cap of 15,000 in place in order to allow for general admission ticket sales, with Fratton Park capable of hosting around 20,000 fans.

Pompey’s home ground is the 20th largest of the 24 sides in the second tier, with just Millwall, QPR, Wrexham and Lincoln City behind them in the pecking order.

But it will be Southampton who host the first south coast derby of the new season, with the sides set to meet on the weekend of 10 October.

The reverse fixture will have to wait until the weekend of 27 February, as both sets of supporters hope for a win against their rival in the coming year.
