The news shows a huge show of strength from the Boro faithful, who have been eager to back Edwards' era at the club following his appointment in June.

The 42-year-old guided Luton Town to the Premier League in 2023 but was sacked by the Hatters in January - who eventually found themselves relegated for the second-consecutive season.

With the team sitting pretty at the top of the Championship after a perfect start to the season, this level of support will only help fuel momentum as they look to maintain their early promise after the international break.

There is a real feel-good factor around the club following an impressive end to the transfer window and an even stronger start to the season, which will naturally be a driving force behind the sold-out allocation for the trip to Preston.

The official announcement from Middlesbrough confirmed the impressive numbers, with the club's social media declaring "SOLD OUT" just prior to lunchtime on Monday.

Having initially been given 3,000 tickets in the Bill Shankly Kop at Deepdale, demand proved so overwhelming that they secured an additional 2,600 tickets to take their total away following to 5,600.

To get to Deepdale from the Riverside Stadium, it takes around 2 hours and 30 minutes one-way by car, so this level of backing surely tells Edwards he's on the right track.

Speaking upon his appointment, Edwards highlighted the "amazing fanbase" as one of the key attractions of the role.

"It felt instantly that this was right for me and it got me excited. If I was going to come back in, I wanted to come back in at a place where we had a chance, and we have a really good chance here," he added.

Boro fans were able to pay on the day against both Millwall and Norwich City - their first two away games of the Championship.

The club confirmed they sold around 2,300 tickets ahead of the clash at The Den - and 1,600 before the Norwich game.

Although the Preston match is obviously closer in distance than both previous away matches, the sell-out is more than just impressive numbers. There is definitely some renewed belief among Boro fans that this could finally be their year to return to the Premier League.

The 16/17 season was the last time Middlesbrough were in the Premier League, as they finished on 28 points in 19th-place. Sunderland were also relegated that season - in 20th - and the Black Cats managed to get promoted for the first time since via the playoffs last season.

Rob Edwards will undoubtedly be buzzing to witness this level of support on Saturday, and it'll definitely provide the perfect foundation for his team to make it five wins out of five.
