BBC Sport have reported that the 25-year-old’s contract contains a £65m release clause that can be triggered in the first two weeks of the winter window.

It follows interest from Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur in the summer, along with the likes of Liverpool and Manchester City who are also said to be having a look at the forward.

It’s a long stretch from the Ghana international’s days with Bristol City, and the level of wages he can expect is on a vastly different scale.

Semenyo certainly isn’t doing bad for himself as things stand, having signed a new five-year deal with the Cherries in the summer.

Under the terms of that contract, Capology estimate that he is pulling in around £75,000 per week, plus £18,750 in bonus, bringing him to a weekly total of around £93,750 – making him one of the highest-paid players at the club, behind only Justin Kluivert and Evanilson.

As a versatile, 25-year-old winger, a full international with a strong footballing nation like Ghana, with multiple clubs interested and widely regarded as one of the league’s brightest attacking talents, Cody Gakpo might be a good benchmark for Liverpool.

According to Capology, the Dutchman earns around £250,000 per week as a base salary, over three times Semenyo’s current wage.

The Merseysiders may guard against handing out such an uplift on a whim, but in the circumstances, they may have to operate in that ballpark to win the battle.

Bryan Mbeumo, having moved to United in the summer as a 25-year-old, versatile forward from one of the Premier League’s middling powers, for an almost identical fee as Semenyo’s release clause, while being a full international for one of Africa’s leading football nations, is perfect to benchmark Semenyo’s expected wage against.

Based on figures from Capology, the Cameroonian’s current wage sees him earn £150,000 as a base salary, with the top salaries on offer at Old Trafford slightly lower than that at Anfield, based on numbers from the site.

That being said, a move to either club would see Semenyo’s pay packet dwarf what he used to earn at Bristol City.

In Semenyo’s final year with Bristol City, Capology estimate that the winger was earning just £2,500 per week.

That equates to around £130,000 per year, which three years on, could soon be less than the Ghanaian’s weekly wage.

To the average citizen, that is a significant sum, but in the upper echelons of football in England, it is a fraction of what the top players are on.

Say, for example, that Semenyo was handed an identical contract to Gakpo after signing for Liverpool, he would be on 100 times more per week than his already comfortable Bristol City wage.

A look at the Bournemouth man’s goals and assists over the past few years is enough to know it’s been a productive period for the forward, but if you needed an extra reminder, look no further than the trajectory of his earnings.
