According to Spanish outlet AS, the top flight club are holding out for the full amount of the forward’s release clause amid speculation over his future.

It was reported last week that the Blues have made contact with the club regarding the potential signing of the 26-year-old.

The winger has a total of four goals from 20 appearances in La Liga so far this season, with the team battling against relegation to the Segunda Division.

Vicente joined Alaves in the 2024 January transfer window, and he has contributed a total of 11 goals and nine assists in the Spanish league in that time.

Birmingham will be asked to pay the full amount of Vicente’s release clause this January if they want to continue their pursuit of the forward.

Alaves are keen to avoid losing any key figures from the first team squad amid their current battle against relegation from La Liga.

This has led to the club seeking the full £17.3 million figure stated in his contract in order to let him go before the 2 February deadline.

Chris Davies is hoping to bolster his first team squad this month as the Midlands outfit seek a promotion fight of their own, with their sights set on the Premier League.

Kai Wagner and Jhon Solis have already arrived since the start of January, but there could yet be further additions before the market shuts.

Birmingham are currently 14th in the Championship table following their 1-1 draw away to Swansea City last weekend, leaving them eight points adrift of the top six.

Next up is a trip to face 24th place Sheffield Wednesday on Tuesday evening in a 7.45pm kick-off.

Carlos Vicente asking price is a lot for Birmingham

Birmingham spent a League One record fee of £15 million to sign Jay Stansfield 18 months ago, but this would go even beyond that.

It’s difficult to see the Blues agreeing to this fee at this stage, even if he would bolster their wide options.

The 26-year-old has shown he is capable of competing at a La Liga level in the last few seasons, but it would still be a big risk to spend so much bringing him to the Championship.

Perhaps this is one that the club could revisit in the summer, when Alaves may reduce their asking price for the player.
