The 52-year-old, who made his name scoring 25 goals for the Canaries in the 93/94 Premier League season before becoming Britain's first £5m footballer when he moved to Ewood Park, now ranks among the corporation's highest-paid sports pundits.

Sutton's transition from the pitch to the studio has been seamless, building on a playing career that saw him score over 150 goals in more than 400 league appearances - Norwich finished 12th in the top-flight when he bagged 25.

That prolific campaign caught the attention of Kenny Dalglish's Blackburn, with Sutton going on to form the feared "SAS" partnership with Alan Shearer, combining for 49 goals as Rovers clinched the 94/95 Premier League title.

According to the official BBC pay report, Sutton earned an estimated £200k during the 24/25 financial year. This places him ninth on the list of highest-paid British football pundits at the corporation - behind the likes of ex-Match of the Day presenter Gary Lineker (£1.35m), and his former teammate Shearer (£440k).

Scorer of the fastest goal ever in the Old Firm derby, Sutton's BBC work includes BBC Radio 5 Live Sport, the popular 606 phone-in show alongside Robbie Savage, Football Focus, and Final Score.

His role as a co-commentator on BBC Radio 5 Live coverage and his regular appearances on the 606 programme have made him a recognisible voice in football broadcasting to those not familiar with his past playing days.

Sutton's earnings reflect his position as a key figure in the BBC's sports coverage - with the report showing he received an increase from his previous year's salary band of £190k - £194k.

How Sutton's salary compares to other BBC sports stars

Within the BBC's sports presenting hierarchy, Sutton's salary places him comfortably in the upper tier of football pundits.

The former Celtic striker's earnings are comparable to other regular BBC football contributors, with Alex Scott earning around £205k and Micah Richards previously earning that amount in 2024.

Sutton's media career has certainly flourished since hanging up his boots in 2007 whilst at Aston Villa - with his no-nonsense approach and willingness to challenge conventional opinions keeping viewers and listeners engaged.

For both sets of Norwich and Blackburn fans, it is perhaps not a surprise to learn how Sutton has gone from scoring a shed-load of goals to one of the BBC's most recognisable voices in the sport - and his very healthy salary of £200k cements that very status.
