The Tractor Boys are preparing for life back in the Championship, and it has been a relatively low-key start to the window in terms of incomings.

However, things are sure to pick up pace ahead of the opener at Birmingham City on August 8, as Kieran McKenna looks to build a team that can bounce back at the first attempt.

After Jens Cajuste returned to Napoli following his loan spell at Portman Road, and Massimo Luongo was released, strengthening in midfield is one of the priorities for Ipswich in the transfer market.

But they aren’t stopping there, as journalist Cesar Luis Merlo has revealed that Ipswich are making progress with a $10m/£7.4m transfer for Ruiz.

He explained that discussions have been ongoing between the Championship side and Toluca, and they have been described as ‘going well’.

Marcel Ruiz would be a statement signing for Ipswich Town

It’s fair to say that this would be a real coup for Ipswich, as Ruiz has just enjoyed the best season of his career so far.

The 24-year-old central midfielder was a hugely influential figure for his club side, as Toluca won the Mexican top division for the first time in 15 years.

He then followed that up by playing a key role for Mexico as they won the Gold Cup, which included registering an assist in the final as they beat USA 2-1.

So, this is a player with a very good pedigree, and he would arrive at Portman Road high on confidence after his contribution to his national team over the past month.

In terms of his quality, Ruiz is comfortable in possession, and he is the sort of player that can link the defence and attack well, whilst at 5ft 11in, he can hold his own physically.

With Ipswich likely to dominate most games this season, it’s crucial that McKenna brings in players who are comfortable on the ball, so Ruiz would fit the bill, and he proved for club and country that he can make a decisive impact when it comes to scoring and assisting as well.

This summer isn’t about making wholesale changes for Ipswich, as they haven’t lost too many key men from last season.

Instead, it’s quality over quantity, and addressing the weaknesses in the team - with central midfield one of those as it stands. So, if they can finalise deals for Matusiwa and Ruiz, they would be in very good shape going into the new season.
