The Championship champions are set to battle for the experienced midfielder's signature
Coventry City are preparing for a busy summer in the transfer market as they gear up for a first Premier League campaign since the 2000/01 season.
And, as seen this season at Leeds United and Sunderland, who are both staying up as newly-promoted teams, top-flight, and especially Premier League-level experience can go a long way to ensuring that former Championship sides can stay there.
Therefore, Coventry have identified Ross Barkley as someone who could provide just that, with it becoming increasingly likely that the 32-year-old will be leaving Villa Park this summer in search of more game time.
The former Everton and Chelsea man worked under Lampard at Stamford Bridge, and the Sky Blues boss is keen to reunite with him. Unfortunately for Coventry, though, there will almost certainly be competition for his signature.
That competition could come via the way of Fulham, as reported by Alan Nixon. The Cottagers arguably have an upper hand over Coventry, with a move there allowing Barkley to return to London, plus Marco Silva's side will easily be able to match what he earns at Villa Park.

Per Capology's estimates, Barkley earns £60,000 per week at Aston Villa, a figure which places him right near the bottom of the wage bill at Villa Park.
With the 32-year-old acting as a squad player for the entirety of his two years at the club, though, it makes sense as to why he'd be nearer the bottom. After all, he's made just nine Premier League starts since his move from Luton Town in 2024.
Fulham, though, while Premier League regulars now, aren't at the continental level of Aston Villa, who have established themselves recently as one of the biggest clubs outside the traditional 'big six' with a deep Champions League run last season and a run to the Europa League final this term.
Therefore, a £60,000 weekly wage would put Barkley in the middle of the estimated wage bill at Craven Cottage.
However, when compared to Coventry's wage bill this year, £60,000 per week would more than double the highest earner at the CBS Arena, as four players earned an estimated £25,000 per week.
Granted, some of these players will likely have clauses that would see them earn a wage hike following their promotion, but if Coventry paid Barkley close to what he is earning at Villa Park currently, the 32-year-old would likely be one of the higher earners at the club next season.

Barkley has already shown what value he can bring to a newly promoted team. His one year at Luton during the 2023/24 campaign may have ended in relegation, but the midfielder was easily the Hatters' best player throughout it.
It served as a mini-career revitalisation for the 32-year-old after a slow end to his Chelsea career and a year out in Ligue 1 with Nice, and earned him a move to a Villa side playing Champions League football, albeit as a squad player.
Under Lampard, who he played 21 league games under in the 2019/20 campaign at Stamford Bridge, he could show the quality he exhibited at Kenilworth Road for a side who will be leaning on him for a lot of experience.
Coventry are going to have to push the boat out on some contracts if they are to remain in the Premier League next season, so while they can look to get Barkley on less money than he is on now with the lure of regular first-team football, they shouldn't shy away from potentially even matching his estimated weekly wage at Villa Park.
If they could get someone with Barkley's experience through the door early, it would lay down a good foundation for what is set to be a very important transfer window at the CBS Arena.
