The Blades came within one game of promotion to the Premier League, but a 2-1 loss to Sunderland in the play-off final ended their hopes of a return to the top flight.

Meanwhile, the Owls finished 12th under Danny Rohl, 10 points adrift of the top six, which was a steady improvement on their 20th place result in the previous campaign.

While Chris Wilder’s side were able to win the bragging rights in the Steel City derby last year, another campaign offers the two sides another opportunity to get one over their bitter rivals.

Here we look at what both clubs will earn from the EFL’s TV deal with Sky Sports by once again competing at a Championship level…

Championship broadcast deal value

Sky Sports are the exclusive broadcaster of the EFL in the United Kingdom, with the company agreeing a deal in May 2024 that runs until the 2028/29 campaign.

The deal means that over 1000 games are shown each year across the three divisions in the EFL.

Sky reported on the deal, claiming that it involves guaranteed payments of £895 million, as well as £40 million in marketing benefits.

This deal represented a 50 per cent increase on the previous arrangement between the EFL and the broadcaster, a significant jump for clubs in the three divisions.

A report by Wales Online in April 2025 revealed that clubs used to receive £2.5 million per season for competing in the Championship.

However, it’s understood that this has now increased to between £3 and 4 million for second division sides.

Clubs also earn a fee for being chosen for TV, which will depend on the number of times they are broadcast per year.

It’s believed this is worth somewhere between £500,000 and £1.5 million per season.

This means Sheffield United and Sheffield Wednesday receive between £3.5 and 6 million per year from Sky Sports for being in the Championship, including for the upcoming 2025/26 campaign.

Sheffield United managed to win the double over Sheffield Wednesday last season, giving them bragging rights for the year.

Wilder’s side won both fixtures, home and away, 1-0.

Goals from Rhian Brewster and Tyrese Campbell sealed the two results, earning the team an important six points in their race for promotion to the Premier League.

However, their play-off final loss to Sunderland has ultimately left them in the second division for another campaign.

This gives Rohl’s side the opportunity to get their wins back next year, although it remains to be seen whether the German will be in charge at Hillsborough for the next Steel City derby.

The fixtures for the upcoming campaign have not yet been revealed, with the EFL set to reveal all on 26 June.
